ΩLuis Navarro and the Silver Medal of the City of Paris (1985)
On December 13, 1985, Luis Navarro was awarded the Silver Medal of the City of Paris (Médaille d’Argent de la Ville de Paris), one of the highest municipal distinctions of the French capital. This recognition is traditionally reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the city’s cultural, artistic, or civic life.
The award included:
Diploma: decorated with detailed illustrations of Parisian landmarks such as Notre Dame, the Pantheon, and the Louvre, framing the significance of the honor.
Medal: a silver piece engraved with the city’s motto “Fluctuat nec mergitur” (“She is tossed by the waves, but does not sink”), symbolizing resilience and cultural permanence.
For Navarro, this medal represented both institutional validation and a symbolic embrace by Paris, a city that had long been the epicenter of modern art and surrealism. It placed him among a select group of artists and intellectuals officially recognized by the French capital.
The Silver Medal confirmed Navarro’s status not only as an exhibiting painter in Paris but also as a cultural figure integrated into the artistic fabric of the city, enriching its dialogue with his distinctive Navarresque Surrealism.
