ΩLuis Navarro and the Knight’s Cross of Belgo–Hispanic Merit (1989)

In 1989, shortly after receiving the Gran Premio Goya in Madrid, Luis Navarro was again honored by the Asociación Belgo–Hispánica in Brussels with the Knight’s Cross of Belgo–Hispanic Merit (Cruz de Caballero al Mérito Belgo–Hispánico).

The distinction included:

Official Diploma: stamped with chancery and consular seals, formally conferring the title.

Medal: a red-enamel cross crowned with the royal insignia, mounted on the striped ribbon of the order, symbolizing cultural prestige.

This honor recognized Navarro not only as an accomplished surrealist painter but also as a cultural ambassador who strengthened ties between Belgium and Spain. His Navarresque Surrealism, born in the Mediterranean, was perceived as a universal language of diplomacy and understanding.

Together with the Officer’s Cross he would later receive in 1990, this Knight’s Cross marked a sequence of honors that placed Navarro among the select artists distinguished for both creativity and cultural dialogue.
